🚨 Cowboys News After Rams Joint Practice: Joe Milton Injury, Dak & CeeDee Lamb Cook & O-Line Issues
0[Music] Welcome in to the Cowboys Report. I am Tom Downey. It’s a depending on which time zone I guess you’re in. Cowboys report after dark since it is getting closer to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time and video won’t be out till after then anyway. Cowboys Rams joint practice has wrapped up. We’ve got the instant reaction on this one. Before we get into it, a sub battle going on between the Cowboys report and Bears now this month. We’re down by a little bit. You know, it’s also 5 days into the month. It’s always a day behind on the analytics. So, let’s get going. Hit that sub button if you haven’t already. Some rapid fire Cowboys news I want to get into here as well. Mazy Smith was back out there on the practice field today. Didn’t do a ton, but the soreness in his knee seems to be fine. Had an MRI. I think it pretty clearly came back clean. So, good news there. Andrew Booth was also back out there. Saw him on the wrong side of a highlight clip uh at one point. Still no Tyler Smith with the knee tendonitis. They’re being very cautious on that from front. Also of note, Paris Campbell has been released from IR. I I’ve seen some confusion on this. This does not create a roster spot. That’s not what happened here. This is he gets to go sign with a new team. The injury was not a season ending one either. The Cowboys don’t want to pay him all year to not play and then leave next year. So, injury settlement. Granted, we’ll see if he finds a new spot, but this was not it’s not free up a rush spot. He was already put on IR previously. Let’s go to Joe Milton. After a pretty strong start to practice, I think you could tell like the difference in just the Cowboys offensive line depth versus the Rams defensive line depth. The twos, he had more time. Joe Milton did a good job. Had a great throw to uh to Jaylen Brooks. blew by Darion Kendricks for a big time play, but Milton left uh left the joint practice, did not return. Apparently hit his thumb on a on a helmet, did not return. Dr. Jerry, you you know how Dr. Jerry is. Uh said it wasn’t serious. He already gotten the report, part of several things Jerry Jones found a way to say that was super annoying because it’s more mic crap that I’m just not even going to deal with today. Of note for Milton, Brian Shottenheimimer also said he wasn’t really of of any concern. He seemed comfortable. said he could have gone back in if he wanted to. We’ll know how much of that is coach speak you when the Cowboys get back to the fields on Thursday and Friday when they have their preseason game on Saturday. But I hope Joe Milton’s out there. I want to see him play. I I don’t need to watch Will Greer for four quarters. I want to see Joe Milton make some big time plays. So if you agree with me and you want Joe Milton healthy and you want him playing in the preseason, let’s send some good vibes out there for Joe Milton. Type JM in the comment section and send some good vibes in the direction of Joe Milton. Spam it for me at the pin comment of today’s show. All right, joint practice takeaways. Boy, I uh Rams seem to win. I I don’t want to There’s no like score. It’s It’s a scrimmage at best. It’s a practice. Like I don’t want to overreact to it, but I think especially in the trenches, it sure seemed like the Rams had the upper hand against the Cowboys. It sure seemed like the Rams were just better equipped. There was one player in particular that that made the Cowboys life hell today. Um but the Rams just they they kind of look more physical, which you know, Shottimers preached a more physical camp in practice and then the the Rams kind of punch in the mouth a little bit. like it’s one practice. You were down some key starters, especially along the offensive line. That is worth mentioning. There were positives. We’ll discuss those two. But I don’t think this was like a Yeah, the Cowboys beat the brakes off the Rams today or beat the brakes off the Rams. I don’t I don’t think that’s what happened today. I I think it got better as it went along. But boy, it sure seemed like the Rams kind of took it to him pretty early. I think a lot of this comes down to this part, too. you know, when the Cowboys had to play backups, Nathan Thomas, Brock Kaufman at times, stunts, pickups, the quarterback room, I think they had some real issues. I think they had some very real issues on that front, which concerns me. A lot of the stuff that like if you were concerned about it going into today, kind of feel like you’re still mostly concerned coming out of today. So, give me your oneword reaction to Cowboys versus Rams joint practice. One word and one word only. Let me know in the comments section of today’s show. Number two, boy, the offensive line had some issues. Uh seemed like more of the left side than anything else. I don’t think Terrence Steel was necessarily perfect either. Didn’t see though. The run offense had real issues, but especially against one man and one man in particular, Cowboys had issues. Jared Verse, that man’s a problem. He was he was consistently in the back field making plays like getting sacks are in air quotes because like you can’t touch the quarterback but there was several plays like that’s a sack like that the ball the pass might have gotten off they might have you know third it sack outside of one solid run for Javvante Williams not much room on the ground again saw the occasional better run from Jane Blue with the twos and the two and a halfs Hunter Lipkkey did have a red zone touchdown that’s noteworthy to me because he got some red zone work like with no Miles Sanders. Felt like it kind of gave Lipkkey a decent amount of run there. But with the ones again outside of one nice cut with some some nice blocks from Ferguson and BB on that play. Not much running for Javvante Williams. Not much room to run, not much success, not not much just big plays. Rams hit a couple big plays, but Cowboys didn’t have that same level of consistency just like with the overall play in and out. Again, I thought Nathan Thomas had had a pretty tough showing. You know, going up against Jared Verse is not a fair match up. You know, Nathan Thomas hasn’t played an opponent in like a non- teammate, you know, outside of practices. It was his first like in-game rep against an opponent in like 800 days or something like that. It’s almost two years because it was, you know, regular season a year and a half ago. It’s been maybe not 800 days. 800 days seems too long. Anyway, it was a long time. He struggled. Like, I wish Tyler Gton was out there. would have had a better benchmark for how good Gayton actually is. But clearly if Thomas has played real snaps, you would better find a way to get the the better players in there for the for the C. Like you better help, you better chip. You you better have the ability to help out your tackles because I am I am worried about that right now. I I think that there are valid concerns about how your offensive line can fare. I I I don’t know if that’s going to be the the as it moves forward. I think your backups in the preseason are going to fare pretty well, but I do think just in general figuring out how you survive if you don’t have Tyler Gay in week one is a pretty valid question as of now. Some let’s see some positive things here because I don’t want to be all doom and gloom guy. I do think Dak Prescott and the passing offense kind of clicked a little bit later. They kind of moved to some quick passing game. when they actually had time offensively, it certainly seemed like there were some nice highlights that there were some Dak Prescott to CD Lamb connections, some big plays. CD Lamb, I I don’t really think any of the Rams corners, who aren’t great, by the way. So, again, like from the Rams side, like pass rush was great. Boy, secondary maybe wasn’t all that great either. That’s some concerns there. when they had time to throw, when they had time to operate in their passing game, I I do think the Cowboys passing offense had some success, which kind of brings me to an overall point in on the offense in general. Haven’t we had that song and dance before of Dak Prescott, go save us? Hey, you know, the the defense has some shakiness against the Rome. We’ll talk about that more in depth, but Dak and Lamb are awesome. And you know, George Pickkins even had some some good plays today as well. The passing offense had success. The run game’s got question marks. Runy’s got question marks. I’ve seen that before. I thought Lamb was awesome. He made several highlight reel plays like just being able to make plays up in the air and just do good things. All that’s awesome. I like that. The passing offense, I think, is is solid if not outright good. Got to protect. Got to protect. So, what is your confidence level in the passing game? Scale it for me from one to 10. One on the low end, 10 on the high end. Number four. Look, the rundy woes are there again. It’s where we’re at. This Run Dy has issues. Kairen has busted several big runs. He had one really nice one where he got to the edge and just blew by everybody. The trenches battle, I think, was won by the Rams. Their their defensive line played the the Cowboys offensive line. There’s no Micah Parsons. Again, you’re down your best player on both sides of the ball. You’re down a starter on the on the offensive line, too. But I had concerns about this going in. Unless they were dominant, I was probably always going to have those concerns. We’ll talk another spot on the defense here in just a second. But first, do the Cowboys actually need defensive help. I think they do. I I think corner is an area of concern. We’ll go more in depth on that. I think defensive tackle is also an area. Mazo was out there for the entire thing. Even with Mazy still need help. So, what do you think? Why for yes and for no? Well, that’s the joint practice takeaway. The Cowboys need quarterback help. They do. Like, look, Devonte Adams is awesome. He is a great football player. We know how talented Adams is. All the Rams highlights sure seem to be like not in the direction of um Don Bland, not in the direction of even Ka Elum. It was the other corner. Devonte Adams took Troy Pride and Andrew Booth for a score. There was a 22 Atwell touchdown that sure looked like it came from a blown assignment in the secondary somewhere. But this is why you can’t go into the season with Troy Pride and Andrew Booth as your quarterback three. Like be be for real. Is Kaman Hall really an answer there either? I don’t know. Like hopefully Diggs is healthy, but who’s to say if that actually happens? All because of all of that. I I think quarterback help is an area of concern for this Dallas Cowboys team. [Music]
