Água de Coco: O Que Ela Faz Com Seus Rins
0(00:00) Coconut water is a good way to hydrate
yourself. Does it harm our kidneys? Can it cause any problems? Can those with kidney stones drink coconut
water without any worries? Is boxed coconut water also healthy? Today, I will talk to you about five benefits
that coconut water can bring to your health. I will also mention that some people should
avoid consuming coconut water. So, stay with me until the end, comment here
if you like coconut water, if you consume it in your daily life, or if
(00:42) you have any specific recipe with this extremely tasty drink. Hello, I am Dr. Thiago, and I am a urologist
here in São Paulo. Right from the start, I can tell you that
coconut water is indeed an extremely healthy, accessible, and great drink for maintaining
good body hydration. Here, I will already advance the first benefit
that coconut water can bring: it is a good hydrating element, a good drink to hydrate
yourself, especially during physical activities. Coconut water is a drink rich in salts like
potassium, (01:22) sodium, zinc, magnesium, and calcium,
and it also has small amounts of carbohydrate. This makes it an excellent drink for replenishment
for those who do moderate physical activities, even better than isotonic drinks like Gatorade
and Powerade. These drinks contain preservatives and a slightly
higher concentration of sodium. Therefore, for those who do moderate physical
eh activities, coconut water is an excellent form of hydration. This is valid for moderate physical activities,
for those more intense physical activities (02:04) lasting over 1 and a half to 2 hours,
then isotonic drinks like Gatorade and Powerade will have a better power of replenishing the
electrolytes lost during physical activity. But for those who are not athletes, for those
who do physical activities for a maximum of one hour, coconut water is indeed an excellent
source of hydration. The second benefit is the improvement of skin
health. With the improvement of our body’s hydration,
you will also have better hydration of your skin. The skin is an organ that needs a lot of
(02:43) good hydration to maintain the barrier of our body healthy. Besides, coconut water contains vitamin C,
and we know that vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, and it prevents the aging of our dermis and
epidermis, which improves the health of our skin. Therefore, coconut water is indeed beneficial
for the health of our skin. The third benefit is the improvement of cardiovascular
health. The main salt present in coconut water is
potassium, and potassium is an element, an electrolyte very important in various
(03:26) functions of our body, mainly in muscle contraction and regulation of blood pressure. Did you know that a cup of coconut water contains
more potassium than a medium banana? Many people eat bananas to replenish potassium,
but in coconut water, you will find this electrolyte in large quantities. This will help and favor your cardiovascular
health. Therefore, coconut water, in addition to hydrating,
provides these electrolytes that will benefit in controlling blood pressure and in your
(04:09) cardiovascular health. The fourth benefit is the improvement of digestion. Indeed, coconut water, by maintaining good
hydration and restoring the balances of salts in our body, allows the intestine to work
better. Since it is light and contains carbohydrates
that are easy to absorb, digestion is facilitated. Besides, coconut water contains a salt, magnesium,
which helps in the relaxation of the intestinal muscles, making the digestion process easier. The fifth benefit is that it helps in renal
health and in the prevention of (04:55) kidney stone formation. Exactly, those who have been following me
for some time already know that hydration is the fundamental pillar for you to prevent
the formation of kidney stones. Therefore, coconut water, in addition to maintaining
this balance of salts in our body, will provide a substance that is citrate. Although it does not have as much citrate
as citrus fruits, coconut water is indeed an interesting source of citrate, especially
when we consider adding it to our daily hydration. Citrate is a salt, a
(05:37) compound that binds to calcium, preventing it from binding to oxalate, which initiates
the formation of calcium oxalate stones, the most common in the population. Therefore, the hydrating power of coconut
water, associated with this supply of citrate, will help in the prevention of kidney stone
formation. And regarding boxed coconut water, is it healthy? Well, boxed coconut water undergoes an industrial
process and obviously, some preservatives are added, which slightly reduces its
(06:22) quality. This is obvious, people even notice this in
the taste of coconut water; boxed water is completely different from natural coconut
water. This does not make it an unhealthy drink. Obviously, when we compare boxed water with
natural coconut water, the natural one is healthier. So, if you can choose between the boxed and
the natural, prefer the natural one. Now, if you have boxed coconut water versus
a soda or another processed juice, the boxed coconut water
(06:56) will be healthier. Therefore, it is not unhealthy or harmful,
boxed coconut water can be consumed. But if you can choose, prefer the natural
one. If you have the option between coconut water,
soda, or a non-natural juice, prefer the coconut water. Agreed? So, does that mean I can drink coconut water
as much as I want? Well, not exactly. Coconut water, unlike natural water, contains
small amounts of fats and sugars, which make it caloric. Although it has low
(07:36) calories, you cannot drink 2 to 3 liters of coconut water daily. What I recommend is not to exceed two to three
glasses a day. Use coconut water strategically, in a way
to maintain a balance, replacing a glass of soda or juice with a glass of coconut water. It will help you maintain a nutritional balance,
providing important nutrients for you, providing some calories and some elements that are important
for your metabolism without providing large (08:15) amounts of calories. Therefore, use it strategically in your day,
placing it at specific moments, not as the main source of your hydration. The main source should always be natural water. Coconut water comes as an adjunct, a complement
there in that day of hydration. And there is a group of people who should
not drink coconut water, who should avoid consuming this water. Why? They are people who have renal insufficiency,
who are close to hemodialysis or even already on
(08:54) hemodialysis. I did not mention that coconut water is rich
in potassium. Exactly, these people, when the kidney is
already in this phase of insufficiency, have problems eliminating potassium from the body. Therefore, if people with severe renal insufficiency
consume too much potassium present in coconut water, it can cause blood potassium to rise
too much, causing what we call hyperpotassemia or hyperkalemia. This can cause serious arrhythmias. So, patients who have renal insufficiency,
close to the phase (09:35) of hemodialysis or on hemodialysis,
should talk to their nephrologist to know the ideal amount of coconut water consumption
and, in principle, should avoid these foods that are rich in potassium. Agreed? Comment below what you thought of this video,

from this information. Information and health are two very important
things that go hand in hand. Agreed? I will leave here two videos for you to watch,
one about red meat, (10:14) what it does to our health, and about
the consumption of natural water, how much water you should drink. I hope you liked it, I am Dr. Thiago, and
see you in the next video.
