FARNESE – A PERSONAGEM MAIS FASCINANTE DE BERSERK

Carl Jung Farnese Vandimíon’s story is marked by several moments of transformation. Each stage affecting the character in a different way, but all guiding her to the same path; self-knowledge. And to get to know her, we will go through her four stages of change, examining the impacts of each one on the character’s development, and the first of them is her origin. LOST DAUGHTER – THE FLAMES OF CHAOS 425 143 185 Born in a cradle of gold Farnese always had everything she wanted, riches, servants, luxury and everything that money could buy. Yet it was completely void of purpose and meaning. This is because her parents were always too busy to give her the attention she so desired. One night, when she heard commotion outside her window, she went out to see what was happening and came across for the first time an execution on a fire. Upon receiving the torch from one of the adults and being encouraged to throw it into the fire where the victim was. This is how she does it. For the first time in her life, she receives the approval she so desired. But that wasn’t all, when witnessing that soul writhing in the flames, a sadistic and uncontrollable pleasure grew in the character. And from that moment on she would never be the same. Farnese burned animals and tortured people to meet his needs to cause pain and suffering. Among his victims was Serpico, a young man very close in age to Farnese. Someone she adopts as a personal servant. At their hands he was flogged, humiliated and injured, all to satisfy his thirst for blood. As she grew up, she showed herself to be a beautiful young woman, which would arouse the interest of several suitors. What her father, as a good politician, had already foreseen and made plans to marry her in order to benefit himself . Therefore, at 16 years a marriage was arranged that would give the Vandimion family even more power. Obviously Farnese was against this forced union And that’s why he ran away from home in the hope of being free from all the pressure and his own inner demons. Serpico, like a good man in love and also obsessed with her, goes looking for her. When he finally finds her, Farnese declares her interest in the young man Suggesting that he run away with her to another place, so they could build a different life than that Which seems much more like a literal desperate escape than a conscious desire. But Serpico, despite his apparent feelings for his lady, refuses her proposal, pushing her back to reality, which leads her to run back to her home, and in the frenzy of her despair she sets fire to the family mansion, which causes her wrath. her father and leads him to send the young girl to a monastery Even though by chance her wish had come true, but not in the way she expected. At this point Farnese was the personification of Chaos, lost and confused, setting fire to and hurting everyone around her. Which led her to her second stage of transformation. CAPTAIN INQUISITOR – THE SWORD OF DARKNESS 762 Upon arriving at the monastery she was soon appointed leader of one of the most important religious orders in Midland; The Knights of the Sacred Iron Chains Her leadership was traditionally that of a lady, which would make her perfect for the role. Thus began her trajectory that would lead her to become one of the greatest inquisitors that the church had ever conceived. The group would quickly claim hundreds of victims in their sacred duty to purify the land of pagan heresy. Among such unfortunate souls would eventually be Serpico’s mother. Condemned to be burned at the stake for being a heretic. Faced with this, Farnese would ask her most faithful servant the unthinkable “Prove to me Prove that she is not your mother Swear once again That I, and only I, am your master Here and forever.” At this point, Serpico was already completely dependent on Farnese. And upon fulfilling this request, he would definitely decide to follow his lady wherever she went. Becoming your tool, without question or hesitation, your sword. The path that follows for both of them leads directly to hunting Guts, the black swordsman The one who would bring an age of darkness to the world And for this he must be eliminated By following him to a nearby village where apparently he had burned dozens of children The which further increased the fury of his pursuers. After a bloody battle against Rosine, Guts is seriously injured and weakened, which ends up resulting in his arrest by Farnese and his soldiers 121 Once in the enemy camp, Guts is interrogated and tortured for information. At least that was the excuse Farnese used to whip his prisoner But contrary to what she herself expected With each lash Guts didn’t show pain or even show a reaction He just laughed and mocked that religion This infuriated Farnese even more Without even realizing it, that fury would turn into excitement Her thirst for lust only increased the each blow And this caused her an obsession and attraction that not even she understood But before she could continue she was interrupted by her deputy commander While Guts was thrown into his cell Farnese punished himself for his dark desires in his tent In the meantime Guts escapes with the help from Puck And sneaks into his torturer’s cabin And there he kidnaps her as a hostage, so that he would increase his chances of escaping Which in the end works perfectly. Guts leaves, taking on his stolen horse the religious captain who had been chasing him for so long In the midst of his escape, night falls and with it come the spirits that tormented the black swordsman Farnese then experiences the horrors that Guts faced every night Still tied up and in Amidst the confusion, she runs away to the mount that had brought her there in the hope of escaping And that’s when one of the most controversial and remembered scenes in the manga takes place The horse possessed by evil spirits tries to rape Farnese But Guts suddenly remembers what happened with Casca and saves her With that the sun rises and the evil spirits are chased away However one still hid in Farnese’s shadow He possessed her body and revealed her darkest and darkest desires She attacks Guts and mounts on top of him begging him he broke it in half very slowly From his experience Guts knew that she was possessed and that’s why he didn’t react aggressively He just intended to extinguish it again But before he could act the sun touched his body and with it the spirit was expelled When he realized what was about to happen what to do Farnese goes into despair, cries, screams, not accepting that it was real By not accepting that all those desires and feelings were in fact inside her Finally she is rescued by Serpico and continues on her journey against evil, in that case Against Guts What would lead her to the events of the Tower of Doom In which pandemonium would take over the place Several evil beings appear and Father Mosgus himself transforms into a pseudo apostle Demonic creatures that broke every reality that Farnese believed in After these events she feels even more lost and realizes that her faith did not portray
the reality she found herself in. In fact, the path that answered her questions was that of Guts. So she goes in search of that
cursed man in search of answers. When she finds him, she begs him to let her go join the gang on their journey Here she realizes that despite seeing herself as the guardian of the lzu, she was actually just the sword of darkness, and this made her want to completely change A, leading to her new, and one of the main, stages of transformation; HUMBLE SERVANT – THE SHIELD OF THE DEFENDLESS 716 Upon joining Guts’ group Farnese soon realized that she wasn’t that important And above all, she wasn’t that useful Among all the members she was the least fit for battle against evil beings Apart from the Shell, of course So much so that over time Guts’ main battle companion is Serpico Followed by Schieke and his magical abilities, and Isidro against humans and weaker beings . She was still lost, but she had freely and spontaneously chosen to risk her own life for someone else Someone weaker. During their journey, the group ends up being attacked by a bunch of trolls And in the midst of the confusion Farnese and Casca end up in the monsters’ lair Where dozens, if not hundreds, of women are kept prisoner as forced breeders for the creatures In view of the horrible scene, they are discovered by the trolls Who immediately start to attack the two And at that moment, even without any real chance of success, Farnese steps forward She raises her dagger and hugs Casca in a completely altruistic gesture She had realized that no matter how useless it was, she could be a shield for someone defenseless That could give meaning to her own existence And that’s exactly what motivates her to fight Surprisingly, even for herself She manages to fend off the monsters long enough for them to finally be saved by the rest of the group After these events they leave for their homeland, seeking to get a ship that would take them to the island of Elfheim The home of the elves, and where they could cure the Casca Arriving in Vritannis, Farnese decides that she needs to be more useful than just protecting the Casca So she leaves to face his past He returns to the Vandimion family mansion where he meets his father, mother and brother. From his father he asks for a ship, which is denied, his mother asks for advice, which in the end would not be so useful . agreement Just as her father had done, he would organize an arranged marriage to gain allies and strengthen his name in the family succession And in return he would give a ship to his friends She accepts the terms and so she sends Serpico to return the magical items which had been borrowed After much resistance and a failed attempt by Serpico to prevent Guts and his gang from contacting Farneses They find her and question her decision Before she could even make her decision, a Kushan attack begins And at that moment of battle Farnese fights alongside her companions to face the creatures that invaded the place. When they finally eliminate all the monsters, Guts asks her if that would in fact be her last stop . To which she realizes that she would only stay out of fear and nostalgia, fearing facing the unknown of her own soul With this epiphany she concludes that that was no longer her place, and decides to continue her journey Or in her own words; “Inside this stone cage, I finally realized that this is not the place I want to return to. It’s simply where, long ago, my journey began.” Understanding that this was just the beginning would lead you to a logical question. Where am I going now? She still didn’t know the answer, but she was sure that she needed to be stronger And that’s why she decided to learn more about magic with Schieke At this point she didn’t want to just be a shield for the defenseless, she needed to evolve Advancing to her last stage of transformation ; PAGAN WITCH – THE SWORD OF LIGHT 351 During her journey to Elfheim, Farnese continues her magic training with the powerful child mage Schierke Who teaches her how to project her astral body Which allows her to experience the world in a completely different way Feeling the power and freedom that only magic could provide. In the midst of her spiritual flights, she ends up listening to a conversation with Guts in which he talks about his relationship with Casca, which leaves her disconcerted and uncomfortable. with all that At a time when she was bathing the hitherto defenseless Casca Casca herself throws a bucket of water at Farnese Simply because some soap fell into her eye Farnese then explodes and unleashes all her anger and frustration on Casca Asking how she can be so ungrateful even after Guts risked his life so many times to save her? Moment in which she herself realizes that she has a certain attraction for Guts That that moment while possessed hadn’t just been her lust taken to the extreme She had feelings for Guts, which even she wasn’t ready to accept. Later in their journey they are attacked by magical creatures, at which point their new skills with magic would be put to the test. She would need to defend the ship from supernatural attacks with the barrier of the four elements Farnese was full of doubts and insecurities Concerns that would only be overcome with the motivating words of Guts Who gives her the mission to protect them It’s your turn You are our shield What really motivated the new mage, and made her fulfill her objective. Upon arriving on the island of elves Farnese gets another important job Rescuing Casca’s mind together with Schierke Upon entering the traumatized woman’s fragile mind They are faced with much greater challenges than expected And once again they need to overcome themselves, join forces to face each obstacle now consolidating her as a useful and powerful member of the group. At this point her development arc is in place, but certainly not yet finished. CONCLUSION 329 Farnese certainly changed a lot after so many events and decisive moments. She went from a spoiled, lost and sadistic girl – Someone who caused chaos to everyone around her To a girl committed to a cause that deep down she didn’t even believe in – Someone who attacked the innocent out of fear And then to a servant completely without purpose or use, needing to empty herself – Someone who protected the innocent so that she could then become the person she really was, a mage with a purpose much greater than herself – Someone who fought for the innocent She needed to undergo an internal transformation for there to be an external change. He transformed into the evil he once fought when he realized that she was actually his own enemy. Which begs the question, what was the moment Farnese realized her purpose in life? Whose was she really? But I want to know this answer from you, what was the most important moment in the character’s development arc? Comment there and I want to know YOUR opinion! Farnese is one of the most interesting and complex characters in the manga, and one of my favorites for sure. In Berserk there are many other excellent examples of character development. But certainly in other works as well, such as Zuko from Avatar – The Legend of Aang.
