This is Skid Row, located in downtown Los Angeles, California. More than 6,000 homeless people live here, in the streets, in tents, and on the ground. The state of California is the fourth largest economy in the world, as if it were an independent country. Its economy surpassed Japan’s in 2024. We are in Hollywood. We walked the streets of Skid Row. We’ll go in here. 116,000 unsheltered. Homeless people gather here from everywhere because of the beauty of the state and its amazing year-round weather. Today, we’ll learn about the stories of organizations, government funding, drugs, mental illness… …and the veterans who ended up living on the street. Most of the organizations that provide food, clothing, and even free overnight shelter are based here. It’s not just one street, it’s an entire neighborhood made up of about 50 blocks, covering nearly one square kilometer. It’s considered one of the poorest and most homeless areas in all of America. It’s home to marginalized groups, where homelessness, addiction, and poverty collide. We started by meeting a businessman from California who is informed and close to the situation. The people who live here aren’t all addicts. Each person has a story. Some are veterans who didn’t get support after the war… …and ended up here. Others are former inmates who were released with nowhere to go. Some were kicked out. after losing their jobs or falling into debt. Some suffer from mental illness and have been abandoned by their families or healthcare institutions. Some are looking for a new beginning but are stuck in a harsh reality. And many are drug addicts which are the majority. Imagine—they broke the fire pump just to shower here But the important question is, are these organizations part of the solution, or are they, as some claim, part of the problem? Stick around till the end. We’ll be interviewing the largest organization that receives direct support from the U.S. government. out here? Even this family. After using a drug injection, they have this designated bin for used syringes so no one else uses it and spreads disease. We’re listening to many stories here. Some are truly unfortunate and have ended up in heartbreaking situations. One moment, before we get back to the video. America is the richest country in the world, with huge budgets, but the money doesn’t actually reach those in need. It suffers from unfair housing policies, lacks a free comprehensive healthcare system, and has a powerful capitalist individualistic system that leaves the vulnerable behind. Look how many tents are here. Do you see that car? There’s a young couple in it, sitting in a BMW They’re using drugs inside the car Now, we’ll visit one of the organizations. How do people walk through this every morning like this? Is it open? This is the organization. We’re going in now to understand more. We got permission to film inside. And we met one of the officials there. They live here. The facility has 300 beds for people who choose to leave drugs behind. He left the street and living here now. Between torn tents and dirty sidewalks lie untold stories. In the heart of a dazzling city… That was Skid Row, Special thanks to Kevin, the expert who accompanied me in this video, and to Shadi, the owner of Image One in California.
